Newly appointed CORP Melvin Lomwa set out on her long journey to Nachola to send her report to Nanyuki, she spotted a couple walking in the same direction. For security, she asked if she could join them, and they warmly agreed. Along the way, they introduced themselves as Lobeki* and Akunga*, a young couple from the Natrukan community. Curious about their journey, Melvin asked where they were headed, and they explained that they were going to Nachola to shop for household essentials. Having recently moved to a new manyatta (collective homestead), they needed a few items to settle into their new home.

As they walked, Melvin took the opportunity to share about her work in the community. She spoke passionately about family planning and why it was essential, especially for couples like them who were still building their future. She gently pointed out that, given the economic hardships in their community—scarce resources, limited access to healthcare, and the ongoing drought—it was wise to have children they could comfortably provide for.
Akunga listened attentively, nodding in agreement. He had been thinking about the uncertainties of their future and saw family planning as a good idea. However, Lobeki hesitated. She had heard frightening stories from other women—tales of excessive bleeding and other health issues caused by contraception. The thought of experiencing such side effects terrified her.
Melvin immediately realised that Lobeki had only heard myths and misinformation. With patience and understanding, she reassured her, explaining the different contraceptive options available and dispelling the falsehoods she had been told. She spoke about the safety and benefits of family planning, emphasising that it would give them the power to plan their family’s future on their own terms.

By the time they reached Nachola, Lobeki had warmed up to the idea. Encouraged by her husband’s support and Melvin’s guidance, she agreed to visit the local health facility to learn more about her options. Melvin promised to be with them every step of the way.
Excited by what he had learned, Akunga couldn’t wait to share this newfound knowledge with his friends. He wanted to tell other men in his community about the benefits of family planning and how it could help them secure a better future for their families.

What began as a simple journey to Nachola had turned into a life-changing moment for Lobeki and Akunga—a decision that would not only impact their family but also inspire many others in their community.
